Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has commented on Manchester United’s reported interest in Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham, describing it as a sensible move. The 19-year-old, who is the younger brother of Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, has caught the attention of top European clubs, including Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, and Real Madrid, following his standout performances this season.
Since joining Sunderland from Birmingham City in June 2023, Bellingham has become a key player in their unexpected bid for automatic promotion from the Championship. He has thrived in a central midfield role as a No. 8, contributing four goals and three assists so far.
As the January transfer window opens, speculation about his future has grown. Goodman believes Manchester United’s interest is justified, particularly given the club’s midfield issues.
Speaking to Plejmo.com, Goodman said, “If I were Jobe Bellingham, I would absolutely stay at Sunderland for the rest of this season. United’s reported interest for the summer makes sense. He’s a versatile midfielder who can play deep, in a more traditional role, or as an attacking playmaker. He can pass, dribble, tackle, create, and score goals.”
Goodman also pointed out United’s struggles in midfield, noting that Bellingham’s athleticism and flexibility could address a key weakness. However, he acknowledged that it would be a significant challenge, stating, “At 19, it’s a big risk, but one that could pay off as he continues to develop.”
Drawing a parallel to his brother Jude’s successful transfer from Birmingham City to Borussia Dortmund, Goodman praised the Bellingham family’s grounded nature and strong support, which he believes will help Jobe navigate the pressures of a potential big move.
Despite the growing interest, Goodman advised Bellingham to stay at Sunderland until the end of the season, suggesting he could help the club earn promotion to the Premier League. “My advice would be to stay at Sunderland for the season. If they go up, he could play in the Premier League with them. If not, there will still be plenty of opportunities in the summer,” Goodman said.
Bellingham’s contract with Sunderland, extended in August, runs until 2028, meaning any potential suitors will need to make a substantial offer to sign him.
