Erling Haaland’s new Man City contract has Liverpool fans all making the same point

Liverpool fans have had their say on Erling Haaland’s extraordinary new Manchester City contract.

On Friday morning, it was confirmed that Erling Haaland, 24, has signed a new nine-and-a-half-year contract with Manchester City, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2034. By then, Haaland will be 34, and if his goalscoring form continues, he could break Alan Shearer’s Premier League record of 260 goals.

However, football is unpredictable, and Haaland’s future could involve transfers to other clubs or potential long-term injuries that might affect his chances of surpassing the record.

This contract, reportedly worth over £500,000 per week, will make Haaland the highest-paid player in both the Premier League and at Manchester City, surpassing Kevin De Bruyne’s £400,000 per week.

When asked about Haaland’s contract during a press conference on Friday, Liverpool manager Arne Slot remarked that “every team spends a lot of money” but stressed that his team remains competitive with top clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, and City.

Fans have been vocal about their frustrations on social media following the news of Erling Haaland’s new contract with Manchester City, especially in comparison to Liverpool’s ongoing contract negotiations with key players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

One fan commented, “Man City giving Haaland a 9.5-year contract, while we’re deliberating whether we should give Van Dijk & Salah a new contract after everything they’ve given to Liverpool. Yes, age plays a part, but the stalling doesn’t sit right with me.”

Another added, “I honestly don’t understand the reason for it dragging out so long. It’s disrespectful.”

A third fan expressed their disappointment, saying, “It’s poor from the club and it’s only made worse by them getting their stooges to embarrass the players for speaking about it to the press. They have a history trying to turn fans against players.”

While a fourth fan stated, “How do you think Salah and Van Dijk must feel? Wouldn’t blame them if they left. LFC deserve better owners. FSG now being exposed for what they are, rubbish owners.”

However, a more balanced view was also shared: “Aside from age, I think it’s more about finding the right numbers in terms of money to pay them. It would certainly feed into contract negotiations with other players at the club going forward.”

Many fans are concerned about the contract situations of Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold, all of whom have deals set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season. With the transfer window now open, the trio can negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs, adding to the uncertainty.
