Arsenal’s title challenge took a hit as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Aston Villa at the Emirates. The Gunners had looked to be cruising with a 2-0 lead thanks to Gabriel Martinelli’s first-half strike and Kai Havertz’s volley early in the second half.
However, Villa responded swiftly, with Youri Tielemans heading in just minutes after Havertz’s goal to halve the deficit. Ollie Watkins then capitalized on poor defending from Thomas Partey to volley in the equalizer, leaving the home fans stunned.
Arsenal thought they had snatched a late winner when Mikel Merino’s strike deflected off Havertz and into the net, but VAR ruled it out after confirming a handball by Havertz. The frustration mounted as Merino later hit the post in the final moments, and Leandro Trossard’s rebound was denied by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
The draw leaves Arsenal six points behind Liverpool in the title race, though they have played one more game. With seven added minutes of play, Arsenal pushed for a winner but couldn’t find the back of the net, and Villa held on for a crucial point.
