Liverpool fans were left on edge after Alexis Mac Allister was involved in a dangerous challenge during Argentina’s 2-0 win against Peru on Tuesday night. The midfielder, who had recently recovered from a groin injury, played nearly the entire match, but late in the game, he was fouled by Peruvian defender Carlos Zambrano.
In the 88th minute, with Argentina leading 1-0, Zambrano made a high, late tackle on Mac Allister, earning a yellow card from referee Wilmar Roldán. Replays from TyC Sports showed the tackle was dangerous, with studs up, which raised concerns that Zambrano could have been sent off. Thankfully, Mac Allister escaped without injury.
Earlier in the match, Zambrano had also clashed with Lionel Messi, leading to a heated exchange where Messi reportedly shouted, “What are you doing, idiot?” according to TyC Sports.
Will Mac Allister Play Against Southampton?
Fortunately for Liverpool and manager Arne Slot, Mac Allister appears to have avoided serious injury and should return to Merseyside in good condition after his international duties. However, with another long journey ahead and a packed fixture schedule, there’s a possibility he could be rested for Liverpool’s upcoming match against Southampton.
Mac Allister, who is currently on four yellow cards in the Premier League, would miss Liverpool’s crucial game against Manchester City if he were to receive another booking. This potential suspension may also influence Slot’s decision on whether to start him at St Mary’s on Sunday.
For now, Liverpool fans will be hopeful that Mac Allister remains injury-free after his international scare and continues his strong form in the Premier League.
