Spanish media reports have revealed that Portuguese police were called in to intervene during the Barcelona vs. Benfica match following a dispute between the players after the thrilling conclusion of their Champions League group stage clash.
Barcelona visited Benfica at the “Light” stadium for the seventh round of the group stage and pulled off a dramatic 5-4 victory just before the final whistle.
According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the altercation took place in the tunnel leading to the locker rooms. Several Benfica players directed insults at Barcelona’s Raphinha after the match, which led to tensions and arguments.
The situation escalated, requiring the intervention of Portuguese police to prevent it from further intensifying. Raphinha was the one who scored the decisive goal for Barcelona in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
As a result of their dramatic victory, Barcelona secured qualification for the Champions League knockout stages.
