The future of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has become a major talking point in recent weeks.
Alongside teammates Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, the England international is in the final six months of his contract at Anfield. With no new deal agreed upon yet and Real Madrid eyeing him as their next right-back, Alexander-Arnold could be on his way out.
Real Madrid, currently leading La Liga, have already made an approach to Liverpool for a potential transfer. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Alexander-Arnold will not leave during the January transfer window.
Romano explained on his YouTube channel: “The expectation since December has been that there will be no movement in January. Real Madrid initially tried to engage with Liverpool at the start of the window, but it became clear the club wasn’t willing to negotiate for a fee of 20, 25, or 30 million. Real Madrid remain confident they can secure Alexander-Arnold as a free agent in the summer. Liverpool, however, are determined to work hard to keep him at the club. We’ll see how the situation develops.”
While Alexander-Arnold has not yet made a decision about his future, Liverpool faces a tough situation. The defender has been pivotal to the team’s success this season, but his delayed decision leaves the club in a precarious position.
Real Madrid’s interest, coupled with the potential for Alexander-Arnold to join his close friend Jude Bellingham in Spain, makes them a strong contender for his signature in the summer.
Although Liverpool is eager to retain Alexander-Arnold long-term, they are reportedly preparing for the possibility of his departure, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong emerging as a potential replacement.
