A Liverpool defender could be ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining a serious hamstring injury.
Arne Slot has several options for the full-back positions, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Bradley, Andy Robertson, and Kostas Tsimikas all available for selection. This depth has allowed Liverpool to loan out several young players, many of whom are currently playing in the EFL.
One of these players is left-back Calum Scanlon, who has been on loan at Millwall since August. However, his season has been hampered by injury, limiting him to just one appearance until January.
Scanlon made his return to action under new manager Alex Neil and marked the occasion by scoring his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw against Cardiff on January 21.
Unfortunately, Scanlon was forced off after just 17 minutes in Millwall’s next match against Luton due to another injury. Following Millwall’s 1-0 win over Portsmouth on Tuesday evening, manager Alex Neil, formerly of Norwich and Preston North End, confirmed that Scanlon had suffered a grade three hamstring injury, which is expected to keep him sidelined for the rest of the season. Neil mentioned, “Calum’s got a grade three on his hamstring. He will be probably twelve weeks, so maybe a season-finisher for Calum.”
The 19-year-old joined Liverpool from Birmingham for around £500,000 in 2021. He made two appearances in last season’s Europa League under Jürgen Klopp but is yet to make his Premier League debut, although he has been included in the matchday squad twice.
At Anfield, there is hope that Scanlon could eventually replace Andy Robertson long-term. His loan at Millwall was intended to help him gain experience and push him closer to a first-team role, much like Conor Bradley’s successful spell at Bolton in the 2022/23 season. However, this latest injury setback may delay those plans for the time being.
