Barcelona Rejects Pep Guardiola’s Offer of Jack Grealish Amid Past Transfer Disappointments
Barcelona’s recent history of signing players from Manchester City has been far from successful, and this time, Joan Laporta and Deco are refusing to make the same mistake. Reports from El Nacional suggest that Pep Guardiola offered Jack Grealish to Barcelona, but the Catalan club swiftly turned down the proposal.
A History of Failed City Transfers
Over the years, Barcelona have brought in several players from City, but few have lived up to expectations:
- İlkay Gündoğan was the only real success, but his La Liga stint lasted just one season before returning to Manchester City.
- Eric Garcia arrived on a free transfer but has struggled to secure a long-term future at the club.
- Sergio Agüero, another free signing, was unfortunately forced to retire due to a heart condition.
- Ferran Torres was Barcelona’s biggest investment from City, costing €55 million, but has failed to justify his price tag and is now expected to be sold in the summer.
Why Barcelona Rejected Grealish
Despite being Manchester City’s most expensive signing (€120 million), Grealish has failed to establish himself as a key player under Guardiola. This season, he has fallen down the pecking order, behind Phil Foden, Savio Moreira, Bernardo Silva, and Jeremy Doku. With City recently signing Omar Marmoush, Grealish’s future at the club is in doubt, leading his agent to explore options, including Barcelona.
However, Laporta and Deco have learned from past mistakes and have no interest in signing Grealish, particularly given his inconsistent performances and off-field distractions.
Barcelona’s New Transfer Strategy
Rather than taking risks on expensive and underperforming stars, Barcelona is now focusing on more sustainable signings, prioritizing young talents who fit the club’s long-term vision. With financial constraints still a concern, avoiding another costly mistake like Ferran Torres is a top priority.
For now, Jack Grealish will not be heading to Camp Nou, as Barcelona refuse to fall into Guardiola’s “trap” once again.
