Enzo Maresca has emphasized the lessons Chelsea learned from their FA Cup defeat to Brighton, particularly highlighting the absence of Nicolas Jackson as a key factor in their struggles. Despite taking the lead, the Blues lacked attacking sharpness and ultimately fell short, prompting Maresca to stress Jackson’s importance to the team’s system.
Maresca on Jackson’s Influence
The Senegalese striker missed the game due to injury, and Maresca acknowledged that his absence significantly impacted Chelsea’s energy and pressing.
“Sometimes you need to play games without certain players to realize how important they are,” Maresca said. “Off the ball, his pressing is always very good, and on the ball, he is always a threat.”
Jackson is expected to return for Chelsea’s crucial Premier League clash against Brighton next week—a game that now carries extra weight following their cup elimination.
Patience and Progress
Maresca urged fans to remain patient despite the disappointment, reiterating that Chelsea is still in a rebuilding phase.
“For me, a good season is about seeing the team improve game after game,” he explained. “Going through bad moments and difficulties is the only way this club can compete for something important.”
No Regrets Over Joao Felix’s Departure
Some Chelsea supporters questioned why the club let Joao Felix leave on loan to AC Milan, especially given their recent attacking struggles. However, Maresca defended the decision, stating:
“I don’t think we miss Joao. He is happy there, and we are happy that he is happy. We had two striker injuries on deadline day, which is difficult to plan for, but Nico will be back very soon.”
Brighton’s Resurgence Under Hurzeler
While Chelsea focused on their shortcomings, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler praised his team’s response after their humiliating 7-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in their previous game.
“I am really proud of how we bounced back from a big loss,” Hurzeler said. “It is very important not to overreact to setbacks.”
He also singled out Tariq Lamptey and Kaoru Mitoma for their performances. Mitoma, who scored the winning goal, recently rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, reaffirming his commitment to Brighton.
Looking Ahead
With Jackson set to return, Chelsea will aim for a stronger performance in their Premier League rematch against Brighton. Maresca will be hoping his side can learn from their mistakes and get back to winning ways.
