Florentino Pérez Regrets Nico Paz Sale Amid Player’s Rising Value
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has expressed frustration over the sale of young talent Nico Paz, who joined Italian side Como for €6 million. Pérez attributed the decision to then-manager Carlo Ancelotti and highlighted that Paz’s market value has since surged by approximately 311%.
Paz, who arrived at Real Madrid’s academy from Tenerife at age 12, made eight first-team appearances last season before seeking more playing time. As part of the transfer agreement, Real Madrid included a buy-back clause, allowing them to re-sign him for €9 million at the end of the current season. The price increases to €10 million in 2026 and €11 million in 2027.
Ancelotti previously acknowledged Paz’s potential, stating that a season away from Madrid would benefit his development. However, the midfielder’s impressive form at Como has led to criticism of the decision to let him go—especially as Ancelotti now faces pressure following poor results, including a 4-0 loss to Barcelona in El Clásico and a 3-1 Champions League defeat to AC Milan.
Real Madrid’s leadership is now considering activating Paz’s buy-back clause, recognizing his progress and long-term value. The situation highlights the difficult balance between short-term team management and long-term player development in elite football.
