Liverpool Bracing for Key Departure as Summer Exit Nears
Liverpool are reportedly preparing for the departure of a key player who has decided to move on from Anfield.
While much of the contract speculation has focused on Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold—whose deals expire in June—another exit is now looking increasingly likely.
Since Liverpool announced the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili last August, it has become evident that Caoimhin Kelleher may be heading for the exit.
The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper has attracted interest from Chelsea and Newcastle, along with other potential suitors who have been given fresh encouragement in their pursuit of the 26-year-old.
Kelleher to Decline Liverpool Contract Extension
According to Football Insider, Kelleher has no plans to sign a contract extension beyond his current deal, which runs until June 2026, and is determined to leave at the end of the season.
Despite excelling as Alisson Becker’s deputy, he has been unable to secure the No. 1 spot permanently.
Departure Seems Certain, But Liverpool Must Secure a Strong Fee
While losing a talented goalkeeper like Kelleher would be disappointing, preventing his departure would be unfair given his ability to start regularly in the Premier League.
Having spent years as Alisson’s understudy, the Irish international—who turned 26 last November—is eager to establish himself as a first-choice keeper rather than remain in a backup role.
If Liverpool are to sell him this summer, they must ensure they receive a suitable transfer fee, considering Kelleher’s strong performances in both domestic and European competitions. His crucial penalty save against Kylian Mbappé in the Champions League victory over Real Madrid this season further highlights his quality.
With Mamardashvili arriving, Kelleher’s chances of becoming Liverpool’s No. 1 will diminish even further.
Though his departure will be a blow, Liverpool must focus on securing the best possible deal—something the club has managed well in recent years.
