Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold recently addressed speculation about a possible move to Real Madrid, acknowledging the club’s interest but setting a specific condition for any potential transfer.
“I’m aware of how much Madrid wants me this summer,” he stated. “But given what I’ve accomplished in my career, there’s a particular jersey number I’d need before considering the move.”
The number in question is the prestigious No. 8, which holds special significance for Alexander-Arnold. Traditionally associated with central midfielders, it has been worn by legendary figures like Steven Gerrard at Liverpool and Toni Kroos at Real Madrid. For him, this number represents leadership, creativity, and a key role on the pitch.
“If I ever leave Liverpool—and that’s a big if—it would only be for Real Madrid, and only if I could wear the No. 8 shirt,” he said with a smile. “It’s a number that means a lot to me—it’s about legacy, inspiration, and the impact I’d want to have at a club like Madrid.”
At present, the No. 8 jersey belongs to Toni Kroos, whose contract expires in June 2025. If Kroos does not extend his deal, the number could become available, making Alexander-Arnold’s condition feasible.
His preference for the No. 8 jersey highlights his desire to evolve as a player. Renowned for his passing, vision, and playmaking ability from right-back, he has often been compared to midfield creators. Wearing the No. 8 would symbolize his ambition to take on a more central, influential role.
With the summer transfer window approaching, it remains to be seen whether Real Madrid will accommodate his request. If the move materializes, it would not only strengthen their squad but also allow Alexander-Arnold to embrace a leadership role in shaping the club’s future.
