Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has officially settled the club’s goalkeeping debate, confirming that Filip Jorgensen is now the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. This decision follows Robert Sanchez’s removal from the starting lineup after a series of costly mistakes.
Sanchez began the season as Chelsea’s number one but struggled with errors in crucial matches, prompting Maresca to give Jorgensen his Premier League debut against West Ham. However, when Sanchez unexpectedly returned for Chelsea’s FA Cup match, confusion arose over whether Maresca planned to rotate goalkeepers based on form.
In a press conference, Maresca clarified his decision, explaining that Jorgensen’s promotion was partly to allow Sanchez time to recover both mentally and physically. He emphasized that goalkeeper changes would not be made on a game-by-game basis, stating:
“Filip is our first-choice goalkeeper at this moment.”
Unless Jorgensen’s performances decline, Sanchez is expected to feature mainly in Conference League matches, given Chelsea’s elimination from the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. If Jorgensen struggles, Chelsea may need to reassess their goalkeeping strategy moving forward.
