Liverpool prepared to ‘pay whatever it takes’ to poach star from European giant in blockbuster summer deal

Liverpool are ‘keeping tabs’ on a highly-rated European midfielder and could be set to sign him this summer.

Arne Slot’s first season at Liverpool has been a major success, despite the chaotic scenes that followed their 2-2 draw against Everton in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. As the team enters game week 25, they hold a commanding seven-point lead over second-place Arsenal in the Premier League.

Liverpool also dominated the expanded 36-team Champions League group stage, finishing as group winners. Additionally, they have a Carabao Cup final on the horizon, where they will face Newcastle United at Wembley on March 16.

However, one aspect that didn’t go according to plan was their 2024 summer transfer window. Aside from signing Italian winger Federico Chiesa, the club failed to bring in any other first-team players, despite their efforts to secure Real Sociedad’s defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Fortunately, Ryan Gravenberch has stepped up in midfield, delivering consistently strong performances in the number six role. While he has remained fit so far, Liverpool lack quality depth in the position, with Wataru Endo serving as his primary backup.

As a result, Liverpool are reportedly monitoring highly-rated Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery. According to Anfield Watch, the Reds have been ‘keeping tabs’ on the 18-year-old French international, who is under contract with PSG until 2029. Representatives from the club have already been in contact with his agent, Joao Mendes, as they explore a potential move.

Reports indicate that Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté could play a role in persuading Warren Zaïre-Emery to move to Merseyside, as he has already ‘held talks’ with the young midfielder.

Zaïre-Emery made his debut for Paris Saint-Germain in August 2022 at just 16 years old, becoming the club’s youngest-ever player. In his first season, he broke several records, including becoming PSG’s youngest-ever goalscorer and the youngest player to start a Champions League knockout match.

Liverpool are reportedly ‘willing to pay whatever it takes’ to sign him and may even exceed his €65 million (£54.2 million) valuation.

PSG manager Luis Enrique has previously praised Zaïre-Emery, describing him as a “diamond” after his standout performance against AC Milan in 2023, where he provided two assists at just 17 years old.

“He is a diamond,” Enrique said. “The most intelligent players always position themselves well based on their teammates. Warren naturally understands that, making him very easy to coach.

“One of his greatest strengths is his humility. Despite being only 17, he remains grounded. That is the best legacy a family can give a child, and Warren is exceptional in that regard.”
