Did Barcelona really want Marcus Rashford? Deco reveals all about transfer talk

Marcus Rashford was strongly linked with a move to Barcelona during the January transfer window after falling out of favor at Manchester United. The forward was reportedly keen on joining the Spanish giants, but the transfer never materialized, and he ultimately secured a loan move to Aston Villa instead.

Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, addressed the situation in an interview with Diario Sport, acknowledging that while Rashford was considered, he was never a top priority for the club.

“The winter market is always difficult,” Deco explained. “In the past, Barça had important signings in January, like Edgar Davids, but there is no Davids available today. The best players, the ones who can make a difference, are usually not on the market.”

He further clarified Barcelona’s stance on Rashford: “It’s true there was talk about him coming, and it could have happened, but we weren’t desperate to sign a forward. We knew we had players returning from injury and others reaching their peak form. If he had arrived, great—but it wasn’t a necessity.”

Now at Aston Villa, Rashford will be aiming to revitalize his career. His loan deal includes a purchase option, which means Villa could make the move permanent if he impresses during his spell at the club.
