We would not consent to it’ – La Liga president Javier Tebas weighs in on investigation into referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero after sending off Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham

La Liga President Javier Tebas Addresses Referee Investigation Amid Bellingham Controversy

La Liga president Javier Tebas has responded to the ongoing investigation into referee José Luis Munuera Montero following the contentious red card issued to Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham during a match against Osasuna. Tebas reaffirmed La Liga’s commitment to transparency and integrity in officiating.

Bellingham’s Suspension and Refereeing Dispute

The controversy arose in the 39th minute of the match when Munuera Montero showed Bellingham a straight red card for alleged dissent. Bellingham insisted his remarks were misinterpreted due to a language barrier, arguing, “I said the words to myself, not to the referee.” Despite his explanation, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) upheld a two-match suspension, citing “disrespectful” conduct.

Conflict of Interest Allegations

In the aftermath, concerns emerged over a possible conflict of interest involving Munuera Montero’s private sports consultancy firm, Talentus Sports Speakers. Reports suggested questionable business ties between the company and La Liga officials. Tebas clarified that while Munuera Montero himself does not provide services to La Liga, his business partner does, prompting further investigation. “We are looking into connections with Talentus Sport,” Tebas stated, stressing the importance of maintaining ethical standards.

The RFEF conducted an internal review and concluded that Munuera Montero’s business dealings do not pose a conflict of interest with his refereeing duties. The federation asserted that his commercial activities “do not present a real or potential conflict” with his role.

Tebas Calls for Refereeing Reforms

Beyond the immediate controversy, Tebas voiced broader concerns about refereeing standards in Spanish football. He suggested that La Liga adopt a system similar to England or Germany, where an independent Technical Committee of Referees oversees officiating. Tebas criticized the excessive scrutiny of referee errors and called for structural reforms to improve officiating credibility.

Real Madrid Fans Plan Protests

The issue has sparked outrage among Real Madrid supporters, who plan to protest perceived refereeing biases and the wider ‘Negreira case’ during their upcoming league match against Girona. Fans intend to display scarves and chant “¡Corrupción en la Federación!” (“Corruption in the Federation!”) in the 12th minute at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Commitment to Transparency

In closing, Tebas reassured fans that both La Liga and the RFEF remain dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of integrity in football. He emphasized that the investigation into Munuera Montero will continue to ensure accountability and transparency within the sport.
