BREAKING NEWS: “I’m a strong guy and everyone around me knows, but whenever I remember what the doctor told me I got broken…It’s k!lling me slowly”: Manchester United’s defender Lisandro Martinez has openly revealed what the doctor told him which is k!lling him slowly.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez has opened up about the emotional toll of his recent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Known for his resilience, the Argentine international admitted the diagnosis has been deeply distressing, stating, “I’m a strong guy, and everyone around me knows it, but whenever I remember what the doctor told me, I get broken… It’s killing me slowly.”

The injury occurred on February 2, 2025, during United’s 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace. In the 82nd minute, Martínez collided with Palace forward Ismaïla Sarr, resulting in an awkward twist of his left knee. The severity was immediately clear as he signaled for medical help and left the field in tears. Medical assessments later confirmed an ACL rupture, sidelining him for an estimated six to eight months.

This marks Martínez’s third major injury setback since joining United from Ajax for £56.7 million in 2022, following a broken metatarsal and a medial collateral ligament injury. The repeated injuries have not only challenged his physical endurance but have also weighed heavily on his mental and emotional well-being.

After undergoing surgery, Martínez shared an emotional message from his hospital bed, expressing sadness but also gratitude for the support from his club, the Argentine national team, and fans. His partner, Muri Lopez Benitez, who is expecting their first child, has been a crucial source of emotional strength.

Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim acknowledged the impact of Martínez’s absence, calling him a key player both on and off the pitch. “It’s a bad situation for us and especially for Licha. He’s not just a great player but a strong character in the dressing room. It’s really hard on us,” Amorim said.

With other key defenders like Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans also sidelined, Amorim must turn to alternatives such as Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, and new signing Ayden Heaven. United’s defensive resilience will be tested in upcoming matches against Ipswich Town on February 26 and Arsenal on March 9.

Martínez’s injury also affects Argentina’s national team, ruling him out of crucial World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil. His absence leaves a significant gap in defense, forcing the national squad to consider replacements.

As Martínez begins his rehabilitation, the football community has rallied around him, offering messages of encouragement. His determination and fighting spirit have defined his career, and there is widespread hope that he will return stronger than ever.
