At a recent press conference before FC Barcelona’s Copa del Rey semifinal against Atlético de Madrid, head coach Hansi Flick addressed concerns about the physical treatment of young players like Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. He stressed the importance of referees ensuring fair play by protecting all players from overly aggressive tackles.
“Referees must protect every player, not just Lamine or Vinicius,” Flick stated. “Dangerous challenges need to be properly penalized to discourage such behavior.”
His remarks come as Yamal’s availability for the match remains uncertain due to an injury sustained in a recent game against Las Palmas. However, Flick remained hopeful about his recovery, saying, “We are optimistic and hope Lamine can play.”
Flick also emphasized the shared responsibility of players and coaches in supporting referees, acknowledging the difficulties officials face. “Referees are human and can make mistakes. It’s our role to protect and support them,” he said.
Looking ahead to the clash with Atlético de Madrid, Flick praised their squad, stating, “They have top players; they are incredible.” Despite the tough challenge, he expressed confidence in Barcelona’s mindset and recent performances.
The issue of player protection has been a frequent topic, particularly regarding young stars who often endure rough treatment. Flick’s comments highlight the need for consistent refereeing to ensure player safety and uphold the integrity of the sport.
