Barcelona Duo Convinced Spain Captain Álvaro Morata to Continue International Career

Morata’s Quiet but Crucial Role in Spain’s Triumph

In a tournament where young stars like Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Dani Olmo shined, Spain’s captain Álvaro Morata played an understated yet vital role in their European Championship victory last summer. Though primarily a striker, Morata focused more on pressing and tactical discipline rather than goal-scoring, netting just once in the competition.

Following Spain’s triumph, Morata considered retiring from international duty as he entered the latter stages of his career. However, encouragement from two key Barcelona players convinced him to stay.

Pedri and Olmo Convince Morata to Continue

In a recent interview with MARCA (via SPORT), Morata revealed that Pedri and Dani Olmo played a key role in his decision to remain with the national team.

“After that interview [with El Mundo], Pedri and Dani Olmo told me they wanted me to stay with them,” Morata shared. Their support reignited his passion for international football.

“That motivated me to continue. I’ve always been part of the national team, but sometimes you go through tough moments. I’ve moved past that stage, and now I just enjoy being here,” he added.

A Veteran Presence in the Spanish Squad

Now one of the senior figures in the squad, Morata has become a respected leader, providing guidance to younger players like Yamal, Olmo, and Pedri. Since Euro 2024, he has featured in four matches for Spain, scoring against Serbia in October. With the UEFA Nations League quarterfinals against the Netherlands approaching in March, he is expected to be part of Luis de la Fuente’s squad once again.

Club Focus: Morata at Galatasaray

At the club level, Morata secured a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray during the winter transfer window. Since his arrival, he has scored twice and is looking to maintain strong form both domestically and internationally.

With Spain aiming to build on their recent success, Morata’s decision to continue playing could prove invaluable as the team transitions into a new era.
