Liverpool’s Summer Transfer Plans: A Striker Overhaul Incoming?
James Pearce has identified a key area in Arne Slot’s Liverpool squad that is likely to see reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window.
According to Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail, Liverpool’s transfer budget won’t be a constraint this summer. This could lead to significant squad changes, particularly if key players like Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, or Trent Alexander-Arnold don’t renew their contracts.
Meanwhile, CaughtOffside reports that Atletico Madrid is interested in Darwin Nunez, who has recently faced public criticism from his manager regarding his work rate.
Is Nunez Heading for an Exit?
Speaking on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast, Pearce suggested that a summer departure for Nunez is becoming increasingly likely.
The Uruguayan has struggled to meet expectations this season, and while Liverpool turned down offers from the Saudi Pro League in January due to difficulties in securing a mid-season replacement, a summer exit could be on the table. Pearce believes moving on might be the best decision for both the club and the player, with Liverpool expected to sign a new striker before next season.
Finding the Right Replacement
Despite his passion and work ethic making him a fan favorite, Nunez’s goal record raises concerns. With 39 goals in 131 appearances—including just six in 35 games this season—his impact has been questioned.
In contrast, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, who was signed for a similar fee in the same summer, has 56 goals in 97 matches, including 21 this season.
While Nunez’s future at Liverpool isn’t decided, his limited Premier League starts suggest he may not be Slot’s first-choice striker. If Liverpool moves on from him, securing a top-class forward will be a priority, especially with the financial backing available for a major attacking reinforcement.
