Arsenal’s preparations for their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid have suffered a major setback following an injury to defender Riccardo Calafiori. The 22-year-old sustained a knee injury during Italy’s Nations League match against Germany, casting doubt on his availability for the crucial tie.
Calafiori’s injury happened when he slipped and landed awkwardly, sparking concerns about a possible anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) issue, especially given his history of knee problems. Although he finished the game, medical assessments later confirmed a first-to-second-degree collateral ligament injury. His expected recovery time of two to three weeks means he will miss the first leg against Real Madrid on April 8 at the Emirates Stadium.
This injury adds to Arsenal’s growing list of absentees. Forwards Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are also likely to be unavailable for the first leg due to injuries, while Raheem Sterling is suspended after accumulating too many yellow cards. However, Arsenal could receive a boost if Bukayo Saka recovers from his hamstring injury in time for the match.
Real Madrid will also be without key midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, who is suspended for the first leg. Additionally, they are monitoring defender Ferland Mendy’s fitness after he picked up a hamstring injury in their recent clash with Atletico Madrid.
The first leg will take place on April 8 at the Emirates Stadium, with the return fixture scheduled for April 16 at the Santiago Bernabéu. Both teams will be aiming to field their best possible squads as they compete for a spot in the semi-finals of Europe’s top club competition.
