Two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has shared his thoughts on Ajax’s rising star, Jorrel Hato, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool.
Talks surrounding Hato’s potential transfer are intensifying, with the promising 19-year-old defender reportedly on the move this summer, and Liverpool rumored to be a possible destination.
A left-back who can also play as a central defender, Hato is highly regarded by top European clubs. Despite his young age, he has already shown impressive skills. This season, Hato has made over 40 appearances for Ajax and contributed to eight goals from the full-back position.
Hato and Liverpool are not strangers, as the teenager was spotted at Anfield earlier this season during the 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town in January. However, he later clarified that his visit was simply to join his friend and fellow Netherlands international, Ryan Gravenberch.
Hasselbaink, a former striker for Leeds United, Chelsea, and the Netherlands, expressed some uncertainty about whether Hato is ready for a club like Liverpool just yet. Speaking to Gambling Zone about Dutch talents, he said, “For me, the standout is Hato at Ajax. He’s still very young but plays regularly.”
“In the Netherlands, he can get away with playing as a centre-back, but that won’t work in England. Technically, he’s very good. As a left-back, he can also move into midfield. He’s got everything—he’s good with the ball, can defend, and is quick enough.”
While Hato continues to develop, Hasselbaink raised concerns about his readiness for Premier League football. When asked if Hato is prepared for a move, Hasselbaink responded, “It depends. He listens well and has a good agent who isn’t rushing him to leave the Netherlands.”
“He had an opportunity to join one of the big English clubs two years ago, but he and his agent chose to stay at Ajax, where he could play regularly, gain experience, and make mistakes, which is exactly what they’ve done.”
