Barcelona could earn €300,000 as Girona consider bypassing fear clause for on-loan star

After securing a 3-0 victory over Osasuna on Thursday night, FC Barcelona will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, facing their Catalan rivals, Girona.

Following their win, Barcelona has established a three-point lead over Real Madrid and will be eager to maintain that lead.

€300,000 for Barcelona this weekend?

According to SPORT, in addition to a potential victory, Barcelona could stand to gain financially from this weekend’s La Liga match against Girona.

Reports indicate that Girona is considering paying a fee to allow Oriol Romeu to play against Barcelona at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Sunday. Romeu, currently on loan from Barcelona to Girona, has a “fear clause” in his contract that prevents him from facing his parent club.

However, Girona can bypass this clause by paying a €300,000 fee, which they are seriously considering.

Michel’s team is facing significant midfield absences ahead of the match with Barça. Ivan Martin is out for a month with an injury, Donny van de Beek is suspended due to yellow card accumulation, and John Solis is doubtful.

“We are evaluating it, and the sporting department will make a final decision in the coming hours,” Girona sources have said.

The final decision rests with Girona’s sporting director, Quique Carcel, but reports suggest the club is leaning towards not paying the fee.

Romeu, a La Masia product, returned to Barcelona in the summer of 2023 for €3.5 million after a strong season with Girona. After a challenging season and limited playing time under new manager Hansi Flick, Romeu chose to return to Girona on loan this summer. He has played 24 matches for Girona this season and could potentially feature against Barça on Sunday.
