Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim could still make a move for a reunion with Sporting CP’s striker.
Arsenal have set up official talks with Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres ahead of a potential summer transfer as incoming technical director Andrea Berta aims to resolve the team’s striker issue at the Emirates Stadium.
Securing a goalscorer is a top priority for Arsenal this summer, especially after struggling without injured players Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus this season. A number of players, including Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, have been linked with the club, but Gyokeres is also a strong contender for a Premier League move.
This week, Portuguese news outlet Correio da Manha reported that Arsenal is actively pursuing Gyokeres, who has an £83 million release clause in his Sporting contract. The report states that Arsenal has scheduled a ‘formal meeting’ with Gyokeres’ agent, who is said to be a close friend of Mikel Arteta.
Gyokeres has scored 40 goals in just 41 appearances this season, establishing himself as one of Europe’s top scorers. The former Coventry City forward netted 43 goals last season and has been described as a ‘top player’ by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
Before facing Sporting CP in the Champions League, Raya noted: “We know his strengths, how he runs behind defenders and excels in one-on-one situations, and he’s in great form. We will try to keep him quiet, avoid giving him any chances, and step up defensively to ensure a clean sheet.”
Arsenal seems to be leading the race for Gyokeres, with talks already underway. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, in his GiveMeSport newsletter, suggested that Manchester United could still be in the hunt. Gyokeres has worked with United manager Ruben Amorim in Portugal and shares a strong bond with the coach.
Romano confirmed that Manchester United “obviously” has an interest in Gyokeres but stated it will be an open competition for his signature.
