Manchester United urgently require a top-tier striker to either replace or support Rasmus Hojlund due to the Dane’s poor form this season.
The 22-year-old finally ended his 99-day Premier League goal drought before the international break, but overall, his hold-up play has been disappointing.
His tendency to back into defenders instead of using his intelligence has been widely criticized, and his performances highlight how Ruben Amorim needs a proven goalscorer this summer.
Ideally, Amorim would like to reunite with his former Sporting CP player Viktor Gyokeres, with the Portuguese manager reportedly pushing INEOS to sign the Swedish forward.
Gyokeres rejected United in January However, according to Football Transfers, the ex-Coventry City player turned down a move to Old Trafford during the winter transfer window.
Journalist Duncan Castles believes the 26-year-old is unlikely to join Manchester United this summer, as he is focused on moving to a club where he can compete for trophies.
“Viktor Gyokeres rejected a transfer to Manchester United in January because he wants his next move to be to a club where he can prove his worth and win trophies,” Castles shared on The Transfers Podcast.
“He wants to join a club where he can demonstrate his abilities and secure silverware. His view of Manchester United at the moment is that it’s not the right choice, especially in a summer when he’ll be turning 27.”
“He’ll consider offers from other clubs and pick the one that he believes will allow him to prove that his performances in England’s lower leagues and at Brighton don’t fully reflect his abilities, and that what he’s achieved in Portugal can be replicated in the Premier League or elsewhere in Europe.”
Not seeking a summer transfer “He will be available this summer,” Castles added. “Sporting have a gentleman’s agreement that he can leave for around €80m, but his agents will attempt to negotiate the fee down to €60-70m.”
Gyokeres has scored an impressive 40 goals and provided 10 assists in 41 games this season, showcasing his clinical finishing ability. However, as previously reported by The Peoples Person, the Swedish international is determined to play in the Champions League.
Unless Manchester United wins the Europa League this season, his dream of playing in the Champions League may not come true.
While Castles isn’t always known for accurate information, he’s typically reliable when it comes to news from Portugal. However, fans and Amorim still believe they can win the Europa League this season, so nothing is certain yet.
United are also considering Victor Osimhen, while they have several affordable alternatives on standby as well.
