Liverpool fans have been left shocked after it has been revealed that club owners FSG are interested in buying Spanish club Malaga.
If successful, the Spanish third-division club Málaga would become the fourth sports team owned by the American group Fenway Sports Group (FSG), joining the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC, and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Málaga, once a La Liga regular, was relegated from Spain’s top division in 2018 after a decade in the league. Their struggles continued in 2023 when a 2-1 defeat to Alavés confirmed their drop to the third tier.
David Ornstein confirmed FSG’s interest in acquiring Málaga through a post on X, stating, “Liverpool owners FSG exploring purchase of Spanish club Málaga.” The Athletic journalist also reported that FSG representatives visited the club’s facilities in February, highlighting the seriousness of their interest.
Ornstein further revealed that the initial focus is on acquiring majority shareholder Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani’s 51% stake. He added that FSG is open to various investment approaches but prioritizes injecting funds to enhance Málaga’s football operations.
News of the potential takeover sparked reactions from Liverpool fans on social media. One fan humorously speculated, “Building a Málaga super team to deny Trent silverware at Madrid? John W. Henry, you little dancer.”
However, amid ongoing contract negotiations at Anfield, many Liverpool fans questioned whether FSG’s priorities were in the right place.
One fan expressed frustration, saying, “Can’t even run Liverpool successfully but already looking to buy another club?” Another added, “Can’t even sort three contracts out and now this?”
A third fan voiced concerns about player retention, stating, “And they don’t want to renew Liverpool’s key players… I’m sorry, but the remaining two will leave.” Meanwhile, another remarked, “These guys want to buy a club but won’t sort out our contract issues.”
The reaction highlights growing unease among supporters, who worry that FSG’s expansion plans could come at the expense of addressing Liverpool’s pressing squad matters.
