Sir Alex Ferguson Reconnects with Former Manchester United Striker Danny Welbeck
Legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently got back in touch with former Red Devils forward Danny Welbeck, who left the club over a decade ago.
During his illustrious tenure, Ferguson guided United to 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League triumphs, and numerous other honors. However, since his retirement in 2013, several managers have attempted—without success—to restore the club’s dominance.
In 2014, United sold Welbeck to Arsenal for a reported £16 million. At the time, Ferguson’s former assistant, Rene Meulensteen, made it clear that the legendary coach would never have approved the transfer.
“Absolutely not,” Meulensteen stated. “If you look at Ferguson’s history at United, he always prioritized developing young players and giving them opportunities. People criticized Danny for his goal tally, but considering the competition he faced and how often he played in his natural position, the situation was more complex.”
Welbeck went on to score 32 goals in 126 appearances for Arsenal before moving to Watford in 2019. The following year, he signed with Brighton & Hove Albion, where he has since netted 34 goals in 152 matches.
Recently, Welbeck revealed that Ferguson reached out to him after he scored in an FA Cup match against Newcastle United.
“I think he was in South Africa at the time,” Welbeck told the BBC. “He called to talk about my goal and performance. The call came from a ‘No Caller ID’ number, so I hesitated at first. But when I answered, it was him—he was buzzing.”
Welbeck expressed how much the ongoing connection with Ferguson means to him, saying:
“He was always a manager who cared about his players and wanted the best for them. Even now, we stay in touch
