Liverpool has shown strong interest in German international Florian Wirtz, a standout performer under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite the speculation, Fabrizio Romano reports that Wirtz intends to stay at Leverkusen “for at least one more year.” Romano stated, “Florian Wirtz has made it clear that his focus remains on Leverkusen and the upcoming Euros. My understanding aligns with this—he has no plans to leave just yet.”
“There are no active negotiations, and those close to Wirtz believe staying at Leverkusen for another season is the best decision. While things can change in football, for now, the situation remains quiet.”
The 20-year-old has been in sensational form this season, netting 28 goals in 36 matches across all competitions.
Wirtz’s future could be closely linked to his manager. In February, Christian Falk reported via CaughtOffside: “Florian Wirtz thrives under Alonso, who gives him complete freedom on the pitch. His stance is clear—if Alonso stays, he will too. However, if Alonso joins Liverpool in the summer, Wirtz might follow.”
This development adds an intriguing layer for Liverpool fans, especially with speculation surrounding Alonso as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp.
It remains uncertain whether Liverpool would be willing to meet the hefty transfer fee required for Wirtz, given their other priorities in the transfer market. However, it’s certainly a situation worth keeping an eye on.
