Koeman Drops Bombshell: Barcelona Not Favorites for Champions League Despite Dortmund Rout
Despite FC Barcelona’s emphatic 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, club legend Ronald Koeman has sparked debate with a bold claim: Barça are not the leading contenders for the title this season.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Koeman praised Hansi Flick’s side but surprised many with his assessment:
“Barcelona is not the biggest favorite to win the Champions League. There are other teams playing at the same level. Personally, I’m backing Arsenal.”
Koeman emphasized that Dortmund, currently sitting eighth in the Bundesliga, isn’t a top-tier European force this season and only managed a handful of chances against Barça — a factor that tempers the excitement around the result.
However, his comments weren’t all pessimistic. The Dutchman applauded Flick’s tactical approach and the team’s progress:
“Flick is doing a great job. The atmosphere in the squad is excellent, and the players now have the experience they lacked a year or two ago. Everyone defends together — not just eight players, but all eleven.”
Koeman acknowledged Barcelona’s evolution under Flick, highlighting the collective effort and improved maturity on the pitch:
“It’s a different team now. I enjoyed watching them. Barcelona is still my home, and they have a real shot at silverware.”
While many expected Koeman to fully back his former club after such a dominant performance, his measured words suggest he’s staying grounded — reminding fans that one big win doesn’t guarantee European glory.
