Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick is reportedly urging the club’s hierarchy to strengthen the squad significantly in the upcoming transfer window, with a special focus on bolstering the attacking department. Dissatisfied with the current rotation options, particularly in high-stakes matches, Flick is looking for top-tier reinforcements rather than squad fillers.
According to El Nacional, Flick has set his sights on elite talent, proposing several names—but his primary target is Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz. Flick, who handed Wirtz his debut for the German national team, holds the midfielder in high regard and believes he could be the ideal number “10” to revitalize Barça’s attack.
Wirtz has bounced back from a serious knee injury to become one of the most influential midfielders in Europe under the guidance of Xabi Alonso. His creativity, vision, and technical quality make him a standout choice for Flick’s tactical blueprint.
Despite already having players like Dani Olmo and Fermín López capable of playing in similar roles, Flick considers Wirtz to be on another level—and has directly asked club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco to prioritize his signing.
However, the road to signing Wirtz is steep. The potential transfer fee could exceed €130 million, a significant hurdle given Barcelona’s financial constraints. Additionally, heavy interest from European giants such as Manchester City and PSG puts Barça at a disadvantage in the race for the 20-year-old prodigy.
Still, Flick’s insistence sends a clear message: if Barcelona wants to compete at the highest level again, marquee signings like Wirtz are essential.
