Liverpool Interested in Florian Wirtz, but Leverkusen Star Set to Stay Another Year
Liverpool has expressed a strong interest in German international Florian Wirtz, who has excelled under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite the transfer buzz, Fabrizio Romano reports that Wirtz plans to stay at Leverkusen “for at least one more year.” The midfielder is said to be fully focused on his club and the upcoming European Championship.
“There are no active talks, and those close to Wirtz believe staying put is the right move for now,” Romano said. “While football can be unpredictable, the situation is currently stable.”
The 20-year-old has delivered an exceptional season, netting 28 goals in 36 games across all competitions.
Wirtz’s future may hinge on Alonso’s plans. In February, Christian Falk wrote for CaughtOffside that Wirtz thrives under Alonso’s system and is likely to stay if the manager remains at Leverkusen. However, if Alonso were to join Liverpool, Wirtz might consider following him.
This adds a layer of intrigue for Liverpool supporters, particularly as Alonso is seen as a potential successor to Jürgen Klopp.
Still, it’s unclear whether Liverpool would be willing to meet Leverkusen’s asking price, especially with other transfer priorities in play. Nonetheless, it’s a story worth watching.
