Liverpool are on the verge of clinching the Premier League title, but not everyone at the club seems to be in a celebratory mood — especially Darwin Núñez.
For the second time in recent weeks, the Uruguayan striker has vented his frustration on social media, only to delete his post shortly afterward. However, many fans had already caught screenshots of the message.
On Saturday morning, Núñez wrote (translated): “No wonder I haven’t played more, because the last game I started in the Premier League went well and suddenly…” — a cryptic comment that seems to hint at deeper frustrations.
This message appears to align with reports from Portugal suggesting that Liverpool would owe Benfica €5 million once Núñez hits 50 Premier League starts — he currently sits at 49.
Addressing these rumors in his pre-Tottenham press conference, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said: “Do you always believe what journalists say? Sometimes you should, but sometimes it’s better not to believe everything that is written about players.”
Still, Núñez’s post suggests he suspects financial motivations are behind his recent benchings rather than tactical or form-based decisions.
Núñez believes he’s being held back at Liverpool
The 25-year-old’s last Premier League start came in a 3-1 win against Southampton, where he scored — a strong performance that made his subsequent omission from key games, including the clash against PSG and the Carabao Cup final, even more puzzling.
While Slot has publicly stated that he has full autonomy over his team selections, Núñez’s deleted post casts doubt on the transparency of those decisions, raising uncomfortable questions.
It’s a surprising move from a player who is just weeks away from potentially lifting the Premier League trophy — and it only fuels speculation that Núñez’s future at Anfield may be in serious doubt.
