Steven Gerrard did not hold back when revealing El Hadji Diouf as the worst teammate he ever played with at Liverpool. In his 2015 autobiography My Story, Gerrard called Diouf a symbol of “how it can all go wrong,” labeling him “the biggest waste of money in Liverpool history.” Gerrard recalled the failed trio of Diouf, Salif Diao, and Bruno Cheyrou, bought to push Liverpool to a title, but who instead dragged them down to a fifth-place finish.
Gerrard didn’t mince words, saying he had “no respect” for Diouf, contrasting him even to controversial players like Mario Balotelli. He blasted Diouf’s attitude, notably recalling the infamous spitting incident against a Celtic fan as emblematic of his disregard for the club.
