Hansi Flick Admits Mistake in Inter Clash: Gerard Martin’s Inclusion Called Into Question
Barcelona’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-final offered plenty of positives—but also revealed tactical shortcomings. While the team showed resilience and attacking flair, coach Hansi Flick privately acknowledged a major early error that may have cost Barcelona control of the game.
The German manager opted to start young full-back Gerard Martin on the left, a decision that raised eyebrows before kickoff. Though Martin had impressed in the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, he struggled against Inter’s intensity and experience. Inter quickly capitalized on the space behind him, storming to a two-goal lead within the opening 30 minutes.
Martin’s inexperience was evident, and Inter repeatedly targeted his side, exposing a disorganized Barcelona defense. Flick reacted at halftime, bringing on more seasoned players and reshuffling the backline. Ronald Araújo partnered Pau Cubarsí in central defense, while Iñigo Martínez shifted to left-back—bringing much-needed stability and helping contain Inter’s wide threats.
Although Barcelona rallied in the second half, drawing level and salvaging their hopes of advancing, Flick made it clear to his staff that Martin would not feature in the return leg. The coach viewed the decision to start the youngster as a key misstep, particularly given Alejandro Balde’s absence.
Moving forward, Flick is determined to rely on experience in high-stakes fixtures—especially as the team sets its sights on reaching the Champions League final.
