Marco Van Basten returns to coaching talk: ‘Yamal is playing out of position’

Lamine Yamal’s hopes of making history as a minor Champions League winner were dashed following Barcelona’s exit at the hands of Inter. Still, the 2007-born prodigy remains a leading contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, according to reliable reports.

Inter’s players took pride in managing Yamal’s creative flair and unpredictability, particularly after his strong performance in the first leg. While the young Spaniard—of Guinean and Moroccan heritage—is still developing, experts widely agree that he excels most on the right wing, where he can cut inside and showcase his signature left foot.

However, Dutch legend Marco van Basten holds a different view. Speaking to Ziggo Sport, the former AC Milan star suggested that Yamal should take inspiration from Lionel Messi and adopt a more central attacking role.

“I think it’s a waste to keep him on the wing where he doesn’t see enough of the ball,” Van Basten said. “If he played through the middle, he could have a much greater impact.”

Van Basten emphasized Yamal’s versatility and goal-scoring instincts: “He can score, deliver dangerous crosses, and create clear opportunities. A player of his caliber needs to be at the heart of the game.”

Meanwhile, Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos acknowledged the young star’s talent, saying, “Honestly, Lamine Yamal is incredibly difficult to stop right now.”
