Barcelona Weighs Goalkeeper Shake-Up as Hansi Flick Eyes Szczęsny, Martínez
As Barcelona ramps up its summer rebuild, newly appointed coach Hansi Flick is making bold moves—starting with the goalkeeper position. While Marc-André ter Stegen remains the club’s clear No. 1, his prolonged absence through injury last season has prompted the Blaugrana to seek a more experienced and dependable backup.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Flick has personally requested the signing of Wojciech Szczęsny, calling the Juventus veteran “the octopus” for his shot-stopping reflexes and commanding presence. Szczęsny, who impressed Flick during a recent El Clásico, has reportedly been offered a two-year deal, but the Polish international has yet to respond, citing his desire to discuss the future with his family.
The potential arrival of Szczęsny could spell the end for Iñaki Peña, who is now evaluating offers from clubs where he could earn a regular starting role. Barcelona is aware of his ambitions and would be open to letting him leave should Szczęsny or another high-profile option arrive.
One such alternative is Emiliano Martínez. The Aston Villa and Argentina star has emerged as another top candidate. The 32-year-old’s passionate performances, including a tearful moment after Villa’s 2–0 win over Spurs, have fueled rumors of a summer exit. Martínez is on the radar of several European giants, including Manchester United, and could become a key figure in Flick’s squad if signed.
With limited financial flexibility, Barça may only move for one veteran goalkeeper. But the intent is clear: Flick wants elite competition and depth across all key positions—including between the posts—as he builds a team capable of challenging for the Champions League.
