Liverpool encounter familiar problem as Milos Kerkez race hits late stumbling block

Liverpool Face Manchester City Competition for Milos Kerkez as Left-Back Battle Heats Up

Liverpool’s pursuit of Milos Kerkez has hit a potential roadblock, with Premier League rivals Manchester City emerging as serious contenders for the Bournemouth star. The Reds, under new head coach Arne Slot, have identified Kerkez as a key target to reinforce the left side of defence, but they now face stiff competition from Pep Guardiola’s side.

While Liverpool were hoping to leverage their connection through sporting director Richard Hughes—who originally brought Kerkez to Bournemouth—the interest from City has complicated matters. The reigning champions are in the market for a natural left-back after a season of rotating players in the position, and Kerkez is reportedly high on their shortlist.

Despite Bournemouth’s £45 million valuation, the fee is not seen as a major hurdle for either club. Liverpool’s challenge may instead lie in convincing Kerkez of their long-term project, especially with City offering Champions League pedigree and domestic dominance.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are also closing in on Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong to strengthen the right flank, with a deal worth just under £30 million nearing completion. However, they could face another head-to-head with City over Florian Wirtz, with both English clubs—alongside Bayern and Real Madrid—interested in the German playmaker.

Kerkez’s performance at the Etihad this week could serve as a timely showcase for both suitors. As the summer transfer window approaches, this Liverpool–City tug-of-war for top young talent is just getting started.
