Liverpool Begin Talks with Bayer Leverkusen Over Florian Wirtz Transfer

Florian Wirtz has emerged as a top summer transfer target for Liverpool, with the club making initial contact with Bayer Leverkusen to explore a potential blockbuster move.

The Reds recently reached out to Wirtz’s representatives, expressing their interest in bringing the 22-year-old attacking midfielder to Anfield—should he be open to a move away from Germany. Although Manchester City and Bayern Munich were previously in the mix, reports now suggest Liverpool have taken the lead in the race.

While it was initially expected that Wirtz would remain in the Bundesliga—either by staying with Leverkusen post-Xabi Alonso or joining Bayern Munich—recent updates indicate he is now leaning toward a Premier League switch. Bayern are said to have acknowledged this shift, allowing Liverpool to move into direct negotiations with Leverkusen.

The transfer, if completed, could break Liverpool’s record £75 million fee paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2018. Wirtz is currently valued around £125 million, a figure that reportedly prompted Manchester City to step back from the pursuit due to financial considerations amid their squad overhaul plans under Pep Guardiola.

Although no formal agreement has been reached yet, Wirtz is considered a key target for new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot as the club builds on their recent Premier League success and aims to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
