Ansu Fati is close to agreeing a deal to leave Barcelona on a loan-to-buy basis, according to a new report.
Once considered one of football’s brightest young talents, Ansu Fati has now been largely sidelined at Barcelona. The 22-year-old winger has made only six La Liga appearances this season and has been left on the bench without playing in 15 of the team’s last 19 matches.
Fati’s promising rise was severely disrupted by a serious knee injury in 2020, when he tore the meniscus in his left knee at just 18 years old. The setback kept him out of action for nearly a year and has had a lasting impact on his career trajectory.
He spent last season on loan at Brighton, but the stint was underwhelming, and it was widely expected that Barcelona would part ways with him upon his return. However, a sale did not materialize.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, that may soon change. He reports that Ligue 1 club AS Monaco are currently in talks with Barcelona over a potential loan deal for Fati, which would include an option to buy at the end of the loan.
As part of the proposed deal, Barcelona would include a sell-on clause, ensuring they receive a percentage of any future transfer fee should Monaco decide to sell Ansu Fati later on.
Fati is reportedly eager to make the move, as it would offer him the chance to play regular first-team football—something he has struggled to find at Barcelona.
His frustrations became evident last month during Barça’s dramatic 4-3 win over Celta Vigo. Though manager Hansi Flick asked him to warm up, Fati was ultimately left on the bench. In response, he threw off his training bib and kicked a water cooler in frustration, highlighting his growing dissatisfaction with his role.
Despite having earned 10 caps for Spain, Fati hasn’t been called up since 2023 and missed out on Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.
Now 22 and turning 23 in October, Fati hopes a fresh start at Monaco can help reignite the promising career that once made him one of football’s brightest young stars.
