As Manchester United prepare for a crucial summer rebuild under incoming manager Rúben Amorim, reports suggest the club is targeting Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap as part of their plans to reinforce their forward line. But not everyone believes it’s the right move — especially Jamie Carragher, who has publicly advised the 22-year-old to think twice before making the leap.
United Moving Quickly for Summer Targets
With Amorim potentially on the verge of securing Europa League glory, the club’s recruitment team appears eager to hand him the tools needed for success in the Premier League. A deal for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha is reportedly close to completion, but it’s Delap’s potential transfer that’s generating the most debate.
Delap, who notched 12 Premier League goals in a struggling Ipswich side this season, is rumored to have held face-to-face talks with Manchester United to understand what a move could look like.
Carragher: “It’s Too Soon for Delap”
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher didn’t mince words when discussing the risks of such a high-profile transfer:
“I don’t think Delap should go to Man United. Look at what happened with Højlund — you’re going from a relegated team to one of the biggest clubs in the world. That’s a massive jump. United’s pressure is a monster.”
Carragher instead advised a more measured progression — suggesting a move to a club like Everton, where Delap could play consistently, grow into a central role, and continue developing as one of the team’s key players.
“He was the best player at Ipswich; everything went through him. He needs two years at a club where he remains the focal point before making a jump to someone like United.”
Stats Don’t Lie
Delap’s performance stands out statistically: only Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer have scored more Premier League goals among English players this season — an impressive feat for someone playing in a relegated side.
Carragher Backs Cunha to Thrive at Old Trafford
Carragher was also asked about Matheus Cunha’s impending move to United and was far more optimistic about that signing.
“I think it’s a great signing — brilliant player. He was in my Team of the Season at the halfway mark. He’s sharp, quick, and fits the style Amorim wants — with two No.10s behind the striker.”
United seem set on shaping a more dynamic attack, and Cunha’s versatility could play a key role in Amorim’s tactical blueprint
