Roy Keane Blames One Teammate for ‘Tarnishing’ McTominay’s Man Utd Legacy

Napoli star silences critics with Serie A MVP award while Keane singles out Fred for the ‘McFred’ debacle

Scott McTominay, now thriving as Napoli’s midfield general and fresh off leading them to a historic Serie A title with 12 goals and an MVP award, has drawn high praise—but also stirred reflection. Roy Keane, in a sharp verdict on McTominay’s time at Manchester United, claimed the midfielder’s reputation was “tarnished” by his partnership with Fred.

Speaking on Stick to Football, Keane lamented the infamous “McFred” duo:

> “It just wasn’t a good combo… I always thought there was something in Scott. He had more than Fred going on.”

Despite Sir Alex Ferguson’s faith in McTominay, the “McFred” nickname became symbolic of United’s midfield malaise. Keane didn’t hold back, stating neither were good enough to elevate United and that poor club recruitment let players like McTominay slip away.

Now adored in Naples, fans call him “McFratm”—a brotherly nod to the Scot’s rebirth. The irony? Fred is also excelling at Fenerbahce with 24 goal contributions. United, meanwhile, are still struggling for midfield dominance.
