Real Madrid eye three midfielders as perfect Luka Modric’s replacement

Real Madrid Begin Post-Modrić Era with Midfield Targets Identified

Real Madrid are laying the groundwork for life after Luka Modrić, as the legendary Croatian prepares to leave the club this summer. The 39-year-old played his final La Liga match in a 2–0 home victory over Real Sociedad and will officially depart following the FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S.

Modrić, who joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, leaves behind a glittering legacy, having secured 28 major trophies—including six Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns. Long seen as the face of Madrid’s short-term contract policy for veterans over 30, his exit marks the end of an era.

Who Will Replace Modrić?

According to Fichajes, Real Madrid have shortlisted three potential successors for Modrić: Enzo Fernández (Chelsea), Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool), and Exequiel Palacios (Bayer Leverkusen).

Enzo Fernández – Staying at Chelsea?
Despite Madrid’s reported interest, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has dismissed any chance of Fernández leaving. The Argentine midfielder has been pivotal for the Blues this season, racking up 20 goal contributions in 44 appearances. With Chelsea pushing for European qualification, Maresca insists Fernández remains a key figure in the club’s plans.

Mac Allister – Committed to Liverpool
Alexis Mac Allister has also been linked with a Bernabéu switch. However, the World Cup winner has publicly expressed his happiness at Liverpool. Speaking to TyC Sports in April, he reaffirmed his commitment to the club, praising his life in England and his role in Jürgen Klopp’s midfield setup. For now, a move seems unlikely.

Palacios – A Xabi Alonso Favorite
Exequiel Palacios appears to be the most realistic option. The Bayer Leverkusen star has thrived under Xabi Alonso—who is set to take over at Madrid—and is highly rated by the incoming manager. Reports from Cadena SER suggest Madrid’s interest is intensifying, though competition from Manchester City could drive his price above €70 million.

With Modrić’s departure confirmed, all eyes are on who will be chosen to lead Real Madrid’s midfield into a new chapter.
