Athletic Club manager Ernesto Valverde has played down the rising speculation surrounding Nico Williams and his potential transfer to Barcelona, offering reassurance about the winger’s future during a recent press conference.
“We’re very happy with him, and I think he’s happy here too,” Valverde remarked. “I believe he’ll stay with us,” signaling his confidence that the 21-year-old will continue at San Mamés for the 2025/26 campaign.
Williams, currently under contract until 2027 and with a reported €58 million release clause, has caught the attention of top clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid. Despite the interest, Valverde stressed the player’s contentment in Bilbao, suggesting a move is not imminent.
Barcelona, eager to bolster their left flank, view Williams as a top option alongside Luis Díaz and Marcus Rashford. Yet, Athletic Club’s resolve and the player’s satisfaction could pose hurdles to any potential deal.
As Athletic Club prepares to face Barcelona in their final La Liga fixture, Valverde praised the champions’ away form but expressed hope for a spirited performance to close out the season on a positive note.
