Oriol Romeu Set to Return to Barcelona as Girona Loan Ends
Girona FC have officially confirmed that Oriol Romeu will leave the club at the end of his season-long loan from FC Barcelona. The 33-year-old midfielder, who rejoined Girona in August 2024, will now return to his parent club—though his long-term future at the Camp Nou remains in doubt.
Romeu initially signed for Barcelona in summer 2023 in an effort to replace the departed Sergio Busquets, but he struggled to cement a starting spot. Despite making 28 La Liga appearances (17 starts), a knee injury curtailed his momentum and reduced his role in the squad.
During his loan at Girona for the 2024–25 season, Romeu made 31 appearances, providing leadership and stability in midfield. However, Girona have opted not to pursue a permanent deal, likely due to both squad planning and age considerations.
What’s Next for Romeu?
With Barcelona’s midfield depth increasing, including players like Pedri, Gavi, Fermín, and potentially new signings, Romeu’s role in Hansi Flick’s plans remains unclear. The club could look to offload him permanently this summer as they reshape the squad.
Meanwhile, Barcelona are also working to resolve Frenkie de Jong’s contract situation before June 30, which could further influence midfield planning and Romeu’s prospects for staying at the club.
Expect more clarity on Romeu’s future in the coming weeks as Barcelona finalize their summer strategy.
