Former Liverpool midfielder Willie Stevenson, a key figure in the clubâs dominant 1960s squad, has passed away at the age of 85, Liverpool FC confirmed on Tuesday evening.
In an official statement, the club paid tribute, saying: âWe are deeply saddened by the passing of former player Willie Stevenson. The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool FC are with Willieâs loved ones at this sad time.â
Born in Edinburgh, Stevenson played as a left-half and made 241 appearances for the Reds throughout the 1960s. He was brought to Anfield by the legendary Bill Shankly, who signed him from Rangers in October 1962 for a fee of ÂŁ20,000.
Willie Stevenson joined Liverpool from Rangers, where he enjoyed early successâwinning the league title in his debut season and lifting the Scottish Cup the following year.
After five years at Anfield, Stevenson departed in 1967 to join Stoke City. The Midlands club also paid tribute to their former player on social media, stating: âThe Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Willie Stevenson, who featured in over 100 matches for the Potters between 1967 and 1973. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Willieâs family and friends.â
In addition to his time at Stoke, Stevenson also had spells with Tranmere Rovers, the Vancouver Whitecaps, and Macclesfield Town.
After hanging up his boots, Stevenson remained in Macclesfield, where he ran a contract cleaning business.
