Liverpool secures £60m signing of Bayer Leverkusen star, who is set to don iconic squad number.

Florian Wirtz Drawing Intense Transfer Interest as Liverpool Pull Ahead

Bayer Leverkusen’s rising star Florian Wirtz has become one of Europe’s hottest transfer targets, with Liverpool, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich all keen on securing his signature this summer.

The 22-year-old German international has enjoyed a stellar season, contributing 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 appearances, helping Leverkusen clinch the Bundesliga title.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly in direct contact with Wirtz, aiming to convince him to choose the Etihad as his next destination.

Liverpool Hold the Advantage Amid Bayern’s Financial Struggles

Although Bayern Munich are eager to bring Wirtz to the Allianz Arena, financial challenges may hinder their pursuit. According to Anfield Watch, the German champions may need to offload players—such as Kingsley Coman or Sacha Boey—to afford Wirtz’s €150 million price tag.

By contrast, Liverpool are in a stronger financial position and are reportedly capable of completing a deal without selling any key players—an advantage that could prove decisive.

Speaking to Anfield Watch, Bundesliga analyst Ronan Murphy said:

“There are plenty of reasons for Wirtz to go to Bayern, but the financial reality could block that move. Liverpool, on the other hand, could likely make it happen without needing to make any sales—so yes, that gives them an advantage.”

Arne Slot Eyes a Creative Spark in Midfield

Liverpool have been conservative in recent transfer windows, with Federico Chiesa their only major addition last summer in a modestly priced deal. Despite the limited spending, new manager Arne Slot has guided the team to a strong campaign.

Wirtz would offer a transformative boost to the Reds’ midfield. His knack for scoring and playmaking adds the kind of creativity and unpredictability that Liverpool currently lack outside of Mohamed Salah—making him a potentially game-changing addition to Slot’s project.
