Joan Laporta wants Julian Alvarez as Lewandowski’s successor at Barcelona – reports

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has publicly acknowledged the club’s interest in acquiring Argentine striker Julián Álvarez, who is currently with Atlético Madrid, as a future replacement for Robert Lewandowski. Speaking to Cadena SER’s Sique Rodríguez, Laporta mentioned that the club aims to finalize the signing by the 2026–27 season.

Álvarez, 25, has made a strong impression in his debut season at Atlético, netting 29 goals. His standout performances have caught the attention of multiple top European clubs. Barcelona views him as a top candidate to bolster their attacking line in the coming years. However, a potential transfer could be complicated by financial obstacles—Álvarez has a €500 million release clause, and Atlético president Enrique Cerezo has insisted the striker is not for sale.

Despite this, Laporta remains optimistic. He believes that with careful financial planning and improved club revenues, Barcelona can work out a deal within their budget. Bringing Álvarez on board is seen as a key move in the next transfer window to ensure a smooth transition post-Lewandowski and to enhance the team’s offensive strength for the 2026–27 campaign.

Barcelona’s interest is also driven by Álvarez’s versatility and compatibility with their playing philosophy. His youth and development potential make him a valuable long-term investment. The club will closely monitor his progress and work toward preparing a viable offer in the coming months.
