Florian Wirtz to Liverpool Nears Completion in Record-Breaking Deal
Liverpool are on the verge of completing a British record transfer for Florian Wirtz, with reports indicating the club has agreed to meet Bayer Leverkusen’s £126.4 million valuation of the German playmaker.
The long-running transfer saga, which has dominated headlines this summer, appears to be nearing its conclusion. Though Liverpool were initially hesitant to meet Leverkusen’s steep asking price, they are now reportedly closing in on a deal that would surpass Chelsea’s £115 million signing of Moises Caicedo, setting a new British transfer record.
Wirtz, who was named Bundesliga Player of the Season after leading Leverkusen to an unbeaten league title, is said to have verbally agreed terms with Liverpool over two weeks ago. According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, a verbal agreement was reached on Tuesday evening. While the structure of the deal remains undisclosed, negotiations are ongoing to finalize payment terms.
Despite rival interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, Wirtz has chosen Liverpool as his next destination. He is expected to travel to Merseyside for a medical soon, and Tuesday’s closure of the initial transfer window phase is not expected to affect the timeline.
The 21-year-old midfielder, who has already made 29 appearances and scored six goals for the German national team, is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising talents. Former coaches, including Xabi Alonso and Hansi Flick, have heaped praise on Wirtz for his technical brilliance, creativity, and fearless style of play.
Upon completing the Wirtz deal, Liverpool will turn their attention to finalizing a £45 million move for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez. Wirtz will also be reunited with former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong, who joined the Reds earlier this summer.
