Laporta wary of Nico Williams signing due to close friendship with Lamine Yamal and its negative impact on dressing room – reports

Barcelona Remain Keen on Nico Williams, But Laporta Wary of Dressing Room Dynamics

Barcelona’s interest in Nico Williams continues ahead of the 2025 summer transfer window, but club president Joan Laporta reportedly harbors concerns—though not about the winger’s talent or tactical fit.

According to journalist Santi Ovalle on Carrusel Deportivo, Laporta fully trusts Nico’s ability and how he would align with Hansi Flick’s system. However, the issue lies off the pitch.

“Nico is very close to Lamine Yamal,” Ovalle explained. “Laporta fears the emergence of cliques in the locker room, similar to those seen in the past.”

This concern harks back to the infamous “Club de Amigos” era, when tight-knit factions within the squad were blamed for contributing to a divided and dysfunctional atmosphere during challenging times.

Laporta is said to be prioritizing unity and professionalism within the squad as Barcelona enter a new phase under Flick, and wants to avoid any potential disruptions to team cohesion.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are already looking ahead to 2026, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the club is targeting Cardoso Varela. The young talent has recently committed his future to Dinamo Zagreb until 2030, but remains firmly on Barça’s long-term radar.
