BREAKING: Barcelona Cuts Ties with $36.5M Defender to Fund Nico Williams Signing

BREAKING: Barcelona Parts Ways with $36.5M Defender to Make Room for Nico Williams Deal

FC Barcelona has officially terminated Clement Lenglet’s contract, a move that will save the club approximately $36.5 million (€32 million) in wages over the remaining two years of his agreement. Lenglet, who joined from Sevilla in 2018 for $40 million (€35 million), has spent the last few seasons out on loan—most recently with Tottenham and Atletico Madrid. He featured in 32 of 34 matches during the 2024/25 season.

Why the Split?

  • Financial Fair Play Concerns: Cutting Lenglet’s $18.3 million (€16 million) annual salary helps Barcelona stay within UEFA’s Financial Fair Play limits.
  • Upcoming Transfers: The savings could help the club activate a $28.5 million (€25 million) release clause for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

What Lies Ahead:

  • Lenglet’s Next Move: He’s expected to sign a long-term contract with Atletico Madrid, potentially running through June 2028, following a successful loan spell under coach Diego Simeone.
  • Barcelona’s Defensive Line: With Pau CubarsĂ, Iñigo MartĂnez, and Ronald AraĂşjo already in the squad, new manager Hansi Flick considers Lenglet surplus to requirements, making the separation mutually beneficial.
